New Email Encryption Threat And What You Can Do About It Now

There’s a price to pay for the increased efficiency and reach enabled by the digital age. We’ve all heard the story before. A massive, multinational corporation neglects some aspect of their security and falls victim to a crippling large-scale cyberattack, with criminals lifting millions of dollars in customer data and digital assets. Equifax, J.P. Morgan, Home Depot, Yahoo!, Verizon, Uber and Target – these narratives are so commonplace that they barely raise an eyebrow when we read about them in the news.

LeadingIT joined hundreds of other IT Support companies at a conference in Nashville, Tennessee in early April. Just as it has been in the news, cybersecurity and crime were HUGE topics at the conference. Kevin Mitnick, author of Ghost in the Wires and world-famous hacker, showed the audience through a series of demos just how easy hacking is. We watched as Mitnick broke into an email account, encrypting all of the emails in the inbox. He then held the emails for ransom and demanded a payment to unscramble the emails. Much like we’ve seen on servers and files before, this attack encrypts, asks for a ransom, and is caused solely by human error. The only way to prevent these attacks is educating staff on what to look out for. This attack targets email accounts, such as Outlook 365.

Kevin Mitnick shows off a gadget that can copy data by proximity. For example if an ID card is close enough it clones its’ information so a copy can be made.

Mitnick shed light on just how accessible our information is. Bank statements, social security numbers, company credentials- you name it- Kevin can find it. That’s why our team is actively working on solutions to prevent these attacks. Part of prevention is to stay up to date on new threats and just how to combat them. We are recommending Office 365 Backup as our latest backup service for your team. If emails are encrypted, this backup retrieves them, so no data is lost.

Here’s WHY you need it and what it does:

  • Backup 3x/day automated for Office 365’s Exchange, OneDrive, and SharePoint and for Google App’s Emails, Calendars, Contacts, Google Drive, Files, and Folders
  • Browse and preview backups by user and item
  • Restore individual files or groups of files back into a user’s account or export directly back to machine
  • Monitor data with domain health status and activity log
  • Store and unlimited amount of data in the Datto Cloud for a small incremental expense
  • Peace of mind your business is protected

Office 365 Backup is available today. Let us know if you’d like to add this service. It’s available now for $315/year for 15 users. We will continue to update you on the latest and greatest security software. As always- stay safe out there!
